Buttercups Sanctuary for Goats, located in Wierton park, Wierton Road, Boughton Monchelsea, Kent, ME17 4JW, is a haven for goats in need. The sanctuary was founded in 1989 by Bob and Valerie Hitch, who initially took in two unwanted goats. Since then, the sanctuary has become the only registered charity in the UK dedicated solely to the welfare of goats, focusing on rescuing abused, abandoned, and neglected goats, as well as those in need of rehoming.
Open to visitors Fridays through Mondays, the sanctuary encourages a suggested donation of £5 for entry, although booking is not required. It's a place where visitors can enjoy time with the goats, with opportunities to brush, walk, and spend quality time with them. The sanctuary also offers husbandry courses for beginners interested in goat care.
For £20 a year, you can adopt a goat, which helps contribute to their costs and care. This adoption can make a thoughtful gift for someone or even for yourself. Additionally, the sanctuary provides the option to become a 'Guardian' for the goats, aiding in their upkeep and welfare.
The sanctuary houses over 140 goats and supports an additional 130 goats through foster homes. It relies entirely on donations and the generosity of its supporters. Contributions can be made to provide food, hay, goat mix, vaccines, and even cover vet consultation fees. For instance, £2.50 can feed a goat for a day, £5 can buy a bale of hay, and £30 can buy a vaccine bottle to cover 50 goats.
To contact the sanctuary, you can reach out at 01622 746420 or via email at enquiries@buttercups.org.uk. For more information, you can visit their social media pages on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Twitter, or explore their website for updates, news, and ways to support the sanctuary.
Buttercups Sanctuary is not just a place for animal welfare; it's also a space for human relaxation and enjoyment. Visitors often find it to be a stress-reliever and a place where both goats and humans can enjoy a peaceful and caring environment.
