Ferne Animal Sanctuary, nestled in the picturesque Somerset countryside, has been offering refuge and rehabilitation to over 300 domestic and farm animals for more than 75 years. Established during World War II by Nina, Duchess of Hamilton & Brandon, the sanctuary began as a temporary home for pets of service members. Over time, it evolved into a permanent sanctuary, continuing to address the growing need for animal care and welfare.
Ferne Animal Sanctuary provides life-long care for many of its residents, including rehoming services for dogs, cats, and horses. The sanctuary is set on 72 acres and welcomes visitors to explore its trails, participate in activities, and learn about animal welfare. Visitor engagement is encouraged through the newly opened Nina's Café and an on-site gift shop.
The sanctuary operates without government funding, relying solely on fundraising efforts, grants, donations, and the support of volunteers. Contributions can be made through single donations or regular gifts, with the option for UK taxpayers to utilize Gift Aid, increasing the value of donations by 25%. Additionally, the sanctuary offers a weekly lottery, the opportunity to sponsor animals, and various fundraising events to garner support.
Ferne Animal Sanctuary also runs a 'Forever Care' program, ensuring animals are cared for when their owners can no longer do so, and operates charity shops that accept donations of goods to support their cause.
